Last year with my Alaska rep Tony Weaver and good friend, Jeff Giansanti, I had the pleasure of fishing the Kenai River where the Moose River comes in. We stayed at the "Great Alaska Fish Camp." We had a wonderful jam packed 2 1/2 days before we headed out to fish with Dave Duncan and Sons Outfitters. During that time, using our Mini-Tip line, fishing the semi-slack water where the rivers meet we hooked 100 Kings and landed and released 42. Teeny Nymphs, Teeny Leeches, and Teeny Flash Flies were what they wanted, in mostly sizes 2. The best colors were black, ginger, orange, pink, and hot green. In Flash Flies which are a two tone color combination we found orange/purple, pink/purple, ginger/black, hot green/orange, Chili/black, and purple/black to be the best ones.
We discovered that the Kings were holding in the soft water and the heavier sinking line were too much weight. The Mini-Tip allowed you to cast and wait until you wanted to start stripping your line in. This way you could fish a much slower retrieve of your fly. All the takes were very positive and some would follow your fly almost up to shore scaring you when they would boil right in front of you. Frog water can be very productive so don't just pass it up as you could be walking by a lot of good fish.
