My next big spring road trip was with my friend and Rep, Jim Lewis who covers Colorado and New Mexico. We called on some of our accounts and fished some great waters. We headed towards the San Juan River and spent a few productive days fishing our Teeny Flies and Lines. People had me so scared that our Teeny Flies were to big and wouldn't work that I tied them down to a size #20! No respectable trout should take flies so small! Stubborn me, I did not put on anything smaller than our size #14 and did very well on some good sized fish.

I started with our T-200 line but picked up too much moss so I changed to our Mini-Tip and that was the ticket for a line. I also did extremely well on our new Invisi-Tip which has a clear 3 foot intermediate sink tip. These two lines proved to be the best all around lines. We did not use split shot or indicators on our lines. We fished just the flyline and Teeny flies. I had my best luck on our #8 & #10 Antique Gold Leeches, stripping them back across the current and in Frog type water. Our largest landed was a fat 22" fish. We each had 3 break off on 6lb. test leaders which felt like much bigger fish. I hope to go back this coming year as I truly enjoyed the San Juan.
We then went to the Gunnison River and got shuttled across the river and hiked up stream a couple of miles. Hooked a few beautiful Rainbows on this early morning outing.

Then we headed up tot he Bar ZX Ranch owned and operated by Dean & Kathy Lampton. Big trophy Trout in the most beautiful setting and their 22 private spring fed lakes
If you want a chance to catch Big Trophy Trout in Lakes this place has it all! Rainbows, Browns, Brookies, Cutthroats, Cuttbow and more. This is the best place I know to get a shot at some double digit fish! Dean and Kathy @ BarZX Ranch phone number is 970-929-6591.
