...perhaps the greatest satisfaction on the first day of the season is the knowledge
in the evening that the whole of the rest of the season is to come.

Florida Tarpon - May 1999

This trip was a repeat of last years with Captain Bruce Chard out of Marathon and Big Pine Key, Florida. There was a great group of ten friends and we all had a wonderful time and experience. I fished with Clay Rawn, owner of three fly shops located north of Chicago. Clay and myself in 5 evenings of fishing jumped 49 tarpon. I returned in early June for another dose of tarpon fishing and in one evening jumped 38 tarpon. On both trips we were landing tarpon up to an estimated 130 pounds. For the record we lost 11 flylines to Bridges! My two favorite lines for tarpon fishing are the Flip Pallot and the Lefty Kreh floating lines. I hand tied some large pheasant tail flies that I believe the tarpon looked at as big “candy bars.” Twelve weight rods, reels, and flylines are a necessity so you can apply maximum pressure. Even then it doesn't seem to slow the tarpon down when they want to run. Never use less than a 30 pound test for your backing. Get as much of it as you can on your reel because it is more than likely that you will need it. Without question a tarpon trip with Bruce Chard is a dream experience! For information contact Capt. Bruce Chard at 1-305-872-4996.
