To the fisherman born there is nothing so provoking of
curiosity as a fishing rod in a case.

Gulf Coast Adventures, August 21-28, 1999

This was the best Silver Salmon trip I've ever been on. Normally, I'm not around during the fall because I am off chasing elk, deer, or caribou with my bow. But, this past August John Randolph (Editor of Fly Fisherman Magazine) and myself agreed to donate a trip to the Boys and Girls Club of Portland as a fund raiser for children. Alaska Gulf Coast Adventures was extremely generous in donating a week of lodging, and their time to help raise money for the Boys and Girls Club. We were there the last week of August and had nice weather for the most part.

The Silver Salmon were just pouring into the river and we were there to greet them. The river we fished the most was the Tsiu, and it had a very sandy bottom with few snags. The Teeny mini-tip flyline was excellent. In certain spots the T-200 worked well and in other spots a floating line was needed. Long leaders were not at all necessary. Four to six feet seemed like the best length for hooking lots of fish. The best fly colors were hot green and hot pink, as well as a bright green tinsel pattern that worked very well. Up in the river the Ginger Teeny nymphs drove them crazy. A dead drift worked well on the lower sections of the river, sometimes a little movement of the fly would trigger a strike. Hook sizes from a #2 down to a #6 were best. The two people that made the winning bid on the trip were Brian Burby and his friend Roger. Brian's brother Dennis also came along. This is a trip that I would highly recommend to anyone that likes to fish for Silver Salmon. The accommodations were excellent, as well as the food and staff.
