The last week of October, 1999, I flew into Buffalo, New York and was greeted by my good friend and Midwest sales rep, Dave Halblom. Excitement was very high, as we had done this same trip the year before with great success. We were after Steelhead and German Browns, lake run from Erie and Ontario.
Oak Orchard Creek was our main target and it's by no means a secret! Hundreds of anglers were there when we were, but you seem to find your own little section, and if you know what you are doing, catch a lot of trophy fish. In 3 days as best as I can figure we may have hooked 300 to 350 fish. Maybe even a few more. Browns, Steelhead, and one nice Atlantic Salmon that measured 29" in length, with an outstanding 19" girth. With the formula it would have been slightly over 13 pounds! Browns were taken up to 13 1/2 pounds. All of our fish were carefully released, but many photos were taken. Chris who owns The Fly Mart shop in Michigan put the group together for the awesome trip!
Brian of Mad River Outfitters in Ohio is also doing such trips as well as Rick Kustich of the Oak Orchard Fly Shop. This is an incredible fall fishery.
The Teeny T-200 was the most popular line for delivering the Teeny Nymph, Leech, and Flash Flies. Sizes 4, 6, 8, and 10's all worked in colors of Ginger, Antique Gold, Insect Green, Black, and Natural. our Teeny Egg Sucking Leeches proved to be extremely deadly on the Big Browns and Steelhead. Shorter leaders of about 4 feet in length were very effective along with dead drifting your line and fly. Some of the other Teeny lines that were also extremely effective were the T-130, our newest line the Tip Taper, and of course my favorite flyline, the Teeny mini-tip. It is hard to express just how great this trip was!
