Angling is somewhat like poetry, men are to be born so...

Northern Lights Haven, August 5th to 9th, 1999

In early August my brother in law Walker Hughes and I went up to Northern Lights Haven in Alaska. This very fine operation is owned and operated by Vern Schumacher. Vern and I made contact at the Portland Sports show last February. We were both exhibitors and Vern had heard that I really liked to Sockeye Salmon Fish. It's known that on an average the Sockeye or Red Salmon are much harder to get to strike your fly. Since 1975 when I took my first Sockeye on the fly legally, I've been hooked. They fight and jump, and run like no other Pacific Salmon I've ever caught. There were a group of us at Northern Lights Haven, probably about 10 of us, and everyone had a really great trip. And, caught a lot of beautiful Salmon. In addition to the Sockeyes we also caught a few pinks and chum salmon. This is a trip I would certainly recommend to anyone wanting to go to Alaska at a fair price. Lodging and food were excellent. The lodge is rustic but I think that is what I liked about it the most.

It was very comfortable andthe owner's and cook made you feel right at home. In addition, if you would like to take some fish home with you they cut, clean, vacuum pack, and freeze them for no extra charge. Walker and I did our best to help them with the fish in the evenings. Here is the best news, a 5 day tip is only $1,700. That is a price that is hard to beat for what you are getting and the experience.
