An undisturbed river is as perfect as we will ever know,
every refractive slide of cold water a glimpse of eternity.

Oregon for Steelhead & Salmon

Recently I had the chance to spend a day on Oregon's Clackamas River. Walker Hughes, Steve Dorn, and I hit some of our old stomping grounds, located just above the town of Estacada. Being there brought back a lot of fond memories for all of us. Before too long I spotted a nice fish and was able to land him on my 5th cast. I was fishing with a #4 Ginger Teeny Nymph, the fish put up a nice fight for a 6 pounder. I got Steve on a couple of fish, but as luck would have it, they didn't take his fly. It appears to me that the runs will be strong in Oregon and Washington this season for Salmon and Steelhead. It is about time that our runs return in fishable numbers.
On May 28th I had the opportunity to fish with Dick Posey, owner of Lamiglas Rods. In all our years of working together, we had never taken the time to fish together. Because of this I was really looking forward to the trip. We headed down to the Oregon Coast, just out of Tillamook to try our luck at those awesome Spring Chinook. To make a very long story short, we hooked close to 20 fish and landed only 3 of them. We figured one at 25 pounds and the other two at about 22 pounds. It was a day of trophy class Salmon fishing on a fly rod. Even though the water was low and clear we needed our heavy TS 650 and TS 750 lines to get the fly down quickly. We used short 4 foot leaders with our Teeny Nymphs. We used #4's in black, ginger, insect green, and natural. All produced well. All the fish were chrome bright and very strong. Dick and I had a wonderful day on the river.
