My next trip, mid April took me to the Situk River in Alaska for the Wild Steelhead. George and Jill Davis, Alaskan Adventures (800) 950-5133 did a great job of coordinating this trip and set me up with Frank Deaoux, who is the top guide on the Situk River!

Only Frank and Bob are allowed to use a jet sled on the river and for the most part it is a Catch & Release type fishery. I believe you could keep a steelhead but most of the fishermen release the Steelhead back to the river.
This was an exceptional trip for me for wild fish and a great chance to spend time with Frank, who knows the river like the palm of his hand. We elected not to use any split shot or indicators and just our Teeny sinking lines.
In 5 days I boated 28 fish up to the 36” class. Frank was very interested to learn more about sinking line fishing and the Teeny tip taper 475 and our TS-650 and 750 were the best overall lines.

Prior to my arrival there had been a few days of hard rain and the river level was up about two feet. The color stayed clear and we could spot fish, it just made getting down to them more difficult. We also fished 3 to f foot leaders to sink our flies down more quickly to the fishes level. This produced more strikes and action for both of us. This was possibly the best “Wild Steelhead” fishery I have ever fished!
