Hi Jim,
Just a quick note let you know that you have provided more "hands on " advice, tips, techniques, etc. than almost all the other shows/arcticles I have read/watched combined. I have just (last year) gotten serious about fly fishing. Because of the costs, I have only been able to get set up for trout fishing.
I am a true "died in the wool" salmon fisherman...I've been going up north for the fall runs for 12 years or more. This has been spin casting...and to be honest, I have had more than my fill of coming home empty handed.
I would appreciate your advice & suggestions on getting a good basic setup for fishinf for the Chinooks in the fall, & steelhead in late fall / winter.  I especially need your advice regarding flies, leaders, tippets, line to use, etc.  I pretty much know what I will get for rod & reel.  I look forward to any advice/help you can give.
Once again, I must say how much your shows / arcticles have helped!
  My best wihes.
  Your flyfishing friend, Pete Godfrey

A Great Guide For The Situk River, Alaska

Through the years I’ve met a lot of wonderful people and some truly great fisherman throughout the world. Frank Deveraux is one such person that guides on the Situk River in Alaska.
In April 2004 I got to spend 5 days with Frank fishing for Steelhead and it was a real treat for me. For anyone that has ever fished with him, they would affirm that he knows the river and his fish. Frank strongly voiced his opinion that a line was truly needed to get down quickly in deeper water with a strong current. After working his home waters, I agreed and told him such a line will be made! This was just the push I needed to make our New “Chuck & Duck line! Frank and many of his customers were tired of fishing monofilament, split shot, slinkies and indicators. They all wanted to get back to fly fishing basics. The New “Teeny Chuck & Duck” now allows you to do just that. Thanks to Frank for pushing me along to make the time to do just that! Hence came the Chuck & Duck in two sizes, we call the Heavy, for Rod sizes 7 through 9 and the Magnum on Rods 8 thru 10. If you are looking for a great fishing adventure in Alaska, pick up one of our Chuck & Duck lines, give Frank a call and book a trip with him. Without question you will learn a lot and have the experience of a lifetime!

CROSSOVER FLY LINE USE

I am always looking for other uses and applications of my gear than its intended use. I came up with a good one for the TST-200 and TST-300 fly lines on a trip to Saskatchewan this summer for Northern Pike.
These lines come with a 10 foot clear tip that is slow sinking along with 14 feet of regular intermediate line connected to 76 feet of floating running line.
I found that this line casts for distance very well and will do so even with a large fly needed for pike. This along with the fact that the sinking section took my flies down to the level of the cabbage weed tops where the pike wait to ambush their prey. This combination was deadly on the large fish.

I ended up using this line more than any other line I had brought along. My “Lightning Bug” (see the Professional Lines page)floating line worked well when the surface bite was on but didn’t allow me to get even weighted flies down into the weed tops. I normally use T-300’s quite a bit for this type of fishing to get down deep but the weeds were so thick I couldn’t get down through them so the TST was just the ticket.
What this all boils down to is, the TST has some great uses other than what it was designed for especially fishing warm-water fish through the weed tops and the moral of the story is, don’t be afraid to experiment with your Teeny fly lines. They are even better than we think they already are.

Travel Tips

Since 9-11 traveling has changed and we need to keep up with it. Any pocket tools or small knives are not allowed. No scissors or pointed objects can be carried on.
As for the traveling fisherman it's pretty nice to have a 4 piece plus travel rod that can fit into your luggage. I am not sure about carrying your flies because of the hooks but I always carry my Reels, Cameras, film and personal items in my carry-on. Your allowed 2 check on bags and one carry-on plus a computer, purse or camera, etc.  Getting to the airport early is a small price to pay for the security that we are now receiving. For  me, the peace of mind is worth loosing a little sleep in the morning.

Just be patient when you travel and you should do just fine. Through all of our travel problems I have learned to pack a little less than I normally did and still get by very well.
